Wednesday Werk: Phorain

Last Week S. P. over at the How to Succeed in RPGs or Die Trying blog took a shot at converting the Phorain over to the Fourth Edition of the Classic Fantasy RPG whose acronym starts with 'D.'

The current play-test group delving into the sequel to Zilgor's Repose includes a Phorain and they are a major species encountered within the Wandering Cities of the Kalaramar Drifts.

  1. That is very cool.

The land speed of a large bird, the upper torso is close to the vertical level of a mounted archer.

The only catch/glitch might be that avians have specific occular placement in their skull... these fellows wouldn't face their target directly while aiming, but likely would turn their head to the side...

  2. The Phorain have eyes that are slightly rotated out a bit so that while they do not look directly forward at an enemy/target, they don't need to turn their head quite as much as some other avian-descended types definitely do. These guys are descended from plains-running hunters, and were somewhat modified by person or persons unknown/unregistered. Much as you point out, a Phorain tends to tilt their head so as to present a fairly intimidating and very focused one-eyed stare right at the target, while keeping the other eye looking out on their flank. It can be a bit unnerving to confront. The guy up above is actually blind. He's an NPC/encounter from one of the Kalaramar Drifts adventures. Some sorcerer cursed his eyes and he wants vengeance...
